General relaxation is a matter of survival when engaged in a number of projects.  Often I use it as a clearing of the slate (or an etch a sketch for the body).

Relaxation feels like one of the gifts that yoga has to offer a dancer.

Justine

Yes – yoga and meditation feed into my practice on a daily basis.  I use both as an unwinding of the body and the mind. a way to ease physical and mental tension.  Before performances I often do a 7 minute grounding meditation to connect myself to the ground and the sky.

Don’t you think that part of preparing for performance is about finding the relaxation in different parts of you so  the adrenaline moves efficiently and the performer is ready to use it  where they can in the moment?

Justine

When performing in especially physically demanding dance works, meditation allows me to centre myself enough to know how to negotiate the work energetically.  It allows me to harness my energy in moments when I get over excited and rally energy through the breath when i feel like i don’t have enough.   Meditation has a way of allowing me to suspend my disbelief in moments of deep fatigue. i am able to feel the resilience of the body.

General relaxation is a matter of survival when engaged in a number of projects.  Often I use it as a clearing of the slate (or an etch a sketch for the body).     Shedding the movement of one choreographer to be able to access the movement of another. actively relaxing invites a concentrated quiet within the body,  allowing for me to take inventory of what is and what is not happening within.   It’s from this point that I can decipher what the body needs going into performance or rehearsal.

Watching a baby sleep – the astonishing moment when they suddenly open their eyes and they are immediately there.

The never ending idea of the traveller and travelling throughout your body – either wandering or directly visiting a place that is calling out. The relaxation has either swept  with air or washed with fluid  the road blocks on the way.
